يتضمن هذا الكتاب سبعة فصول تناولت حالات إنسانية مختلفة من الفلسطينيين، تتراوح بين ساكني قرى قُسّمتْ بالحدود التي فرضها خط هدنة عام 1949، وسكان من أصل فلسطيني قُطِعتْ جذورهم في فلسطين؛ وهم يريدون الآن أن يؤسسوا حياتهم وحياة أطفالهم خارج فلسطين، وحتى خارج الوطن العربي.
وتتعامل أبحاث الكتاب مع العوامل الاجتماعية والاقتصادية المؤثرة في العودة، والجهود الحقيقية والافتراضية للعودة إلى فلسطين بمجموعتين مختلفتين: مجموعة الشباب ومجموعة الخبراء المهنيين.
ويبقى الموضوع الرئيسي الجامع فصول أو أبحاث هذا الكتاب هو دور الحدود الجغرافية والحواجز، تلك التي يحاول الناس عبورها، وتلك التي خلقتها الصيرورات السياسية حول السكان (مثل الخط الأخضر والجدار الإسرائيلي)؛ فالبعض يتنقّل ويهاجر، وبعض آخر يطوّر استراتيجيات البقاء للتعامل مع جديد و"خطوط ظلّ" سياسية، تعرقل حركتهم. وتعتبر حرية الحركة وعرقلتها جزءاً من المعرفة السوسيولوجية التي يشكّل استشفافها ضرورة لفهم اختيارات اللاجئين بخصوص هجرة العودة.
لذا، تشكّل جهود المشاركين في إعداد هذا الكتاب مساهمات لفهم المعضلات التي واجهت الشرائح المختلفة من السكان الفلسطينيين في الفترة التي سبقت بناء الحائط الإسرائيلي، بداية من العام 2005، ذلك الحائط الذي قطع أكثر أوصال المناطق الفلسطينية.
