يقول د. يونان لبيب رزق في مقدمة هذا الكتاب: هذا العمل في رأينا يمكن توصيفه بالكتاب المرجعي فيما يخص حدود مصر الشرقية، يحتاج إليه المهتمون بالتاريخ المصري الحديث بنفس القدر الذي يهتم به المعنيون بالشأن الوطني. ظلت حدود مصر الشرقية مصدر الخطر الرئيسي على أمن مصر القومي بطول تاريخها. وقد بدأت قضية الحدود الشرقية في العصر الحديث منذ شق قناة السويس التي أكدت على موقع مصر الحيوي والرابط بين أوروبا والشرق. ومن هذه النقطة تبدأ المؤلفة ألفت الخشاب كتابها المهم الذي أعدته في الأصل كرسالة للدكتوراه. وتصحبنا هذه الدراسة، التي تعد أول بحث علمي موثق في موضوعها، في رحلة ممتعة وممتدة تبدأ من أول عملية ترسيم للحد الشرقي لمصر، والتي قام بها الخديو عباس حلمي الثاني بعد خلافه مع السلطان العثماني، ثم الصراع بين بريطانيا والدولة العثمانية حول القضية ذاتها فيما عرف بأزمة طابا الأولى عام 1906. كما يعرض لقصة الصراع الأعنف حول هذا الحد السياسي، ومن ثم شبه جزيرة سيناء، منذ 1948 عند تأسيس دولة إسرائيل، مرورا بنكسة 1967 والانتصار عام 1973، ثم المراحل الطويلة والمرهقة للمفاوضات المصرية الإسرائيلية، حتى قرار محكمة العدل الدولية عام 1988.
