يستند هذا الكتاب إلى مذكرات يومية كتبتها ماكس فون أوبنهايم في صيف 1893م خلال رحلته من بيروت عبر حواران والبادية والسورية وبلاد ما بين النهرين إلى بغداد والخليج العربي. إلا أن مذكرته لم تكن مجرد وصف للرحلة وإنما حرصه أيضاً على الحديث عن البلاد والناس، عن تطورهم التاريخي وعن انتماءاتهم العرقية والدينية. وفي أُناء ذلك رأى من واجبه أن يتطرق بين حين وآخر إلى المصادر الكثيرة التي تعالج تاريخ وجغرافية سورية وبلاد الرافدين والتي تشمل، إلى جانب المراجع الكلاسيكية لمؤلفين إغريقيين ورومان وعرب وكذلك مؤلفات مؤرخين عرب حديثين، العديد من كتب الرحلات الأوروبية القديمة وعدداً كبيراً من المقالات العلمية الجديدة المنتشرة في مجالات كثيرة من الصعب الوصول إلى بعضها.
ولقد حرص كل الحرص على كتابة الأسماء العربية للأماكن والأشخاص بشكل صحيح بأن طلب من سوريين متعلمين موجودين في نفس الموقع كتابتها بالأحرف العربية. ثم قام شخصياً بمراقبة هذا العمل باستمرار وتأكد من صحته خلال ترحاله كلما سنحت الفرصة.
قام برسم الخرائط المنشورة في الكتاب السيد الدكتور ريشارد كيبرت الذي استطاع ماكس فون أوبنهايم إقناعه برسم خريطة شاملة لسورية وبلاد الرافدين تضمنت، بالإضافة إلى نتائج رحلته نتائج الدراسات الجغرافية العلمية المنشورة عن المنطقة والعديد من الخرائط غير المنشورة حتى الآن. ولقد استغرق العمل، الذي تصدى له السيد الدكتور كيبرت مشكوراً، أكثر من عام ونصف.
