هذا الكتاب جزء من دراسة علمية ميدانية بحثية قام بها المستشرق والأنثنوبولجي والأثاري الألماني البارون أوبنهايم بين عام 1893 و1894. صدرت هذه الدراسة بجزئين تحت عنوان من البحر المتوسط إلى الخليج.
الجزء الأول من الكتاب تناول سورية ولبنان حيث قدم لنا أوبنهايم دراسات مهمة تاريخية وسياسية عن الأقليات الدينية والمذهبية والعرقية وكذلك عن القبائل والعشائر في هذه المنطقة، أما الجزء الثاني فتناول العراق والجزيرة العربية إلى مسقط.
يقول المؤلف: يعود أصل الدروز الحالي إلى أجزاء من قبائل عربية جاءت في القرن الثاني الهجري إلى لبنان الذي كان آنذاك آرامياً مسيحياً وانضمت إليهم فيما بعد بعض العناصر التركية والكردية ولكن هؤلاء امتصهم العنصر العربي الغالب.
