إن موضوع "تأثير الإسلام في أوروبا" يُشكّل مبحثاً مهماً تناوله عدد من العلماء والباحثين، ومن أبرزهم المستشرق البريطاني وليام مونتغمري واط، الذي فنّد في كتابه أسباب نظرة بعض مسيحي أوروبا العصور الوسطى العدائية إلى الإسلام، وبحث في تأثير علوم المسلمين بمجملها في أوروبا، معترفاً بأهمية ما قدمته هذه العلوم لها.
ويقول مونتغمري واط أنه "بسبب وقوف أوروبا ضد الإسلام، قلّلت من شأن التأثير الإسلامي، وبالغت في إعتمادها على تراث الإغريق والرومان، ولذلك، مهمتنا نحن اوروبيي اليوم - حيث إنما ننتقل إلى عصر عالم الواحد - تصحيح الإعتقادات الخاطئة، والإعتراف بفضل العالَمين العربي والإسلامي".
ويرى أنه على الرغم من محاولات الحطّ من شأن الحضارة الإسلامية، إلا أنه لا يمكن تجاهل حقيقة أن الإسلام أنتج حضارة متميزة وأصيلة استفادت من بعض العلوم في الحضارات المختلفة، وراكمت عليها، ثم كانت هي أساساً في تشكيل عصر النهضة في أوروبا.
يبحث هذا الكتاب تأثير الإسلام في أوروبا في العصور الوسطى بدءاً من التوسع الإسلامي فيها والسمات المميزة لتأثير العرب، مروراً بالعلاقات التجارية والتقنية التي كانت تربط بين العالَميْن العربي والأوروبي وصولاً إلى إنجازات العرب في مجالات متنوعة.
