يعبر هذا الكتاب، في خطوطه العريضة كما في أحكامه التفصيلية، عن اتجاه عنصري يبدو أنه ما زال سائداً في عديد من دوائر الاستشراق وذلك عندما يتصدى لدراسة الإسلام، وديناً وحضارة، والمسلمين كحملة للإسلام ومن حيث هم جماعة بشرية متميزة.
وإذا كان هذا الاتجاه يسعى لأن يقنع أحكامه بإطار من الموضوعية والدقة العلميتين، إلا أنه في الواقع لا يخرج عن كونه تعبيراً عن العنصرية الكامنة في الثقافة الغربية عندما تنظر إلى الآخر سواء كان هذا الآخر هو "الإسلام"، أم "العرب"، أم "الشرق" على وجه الإجمال.
ولعل أوضح ما تتجلى به هذه النزعة العنصرية في هذا الكتاب، عندما يحاول المؤلف أن يرد الإسلام، من حيث هو دين، إلى ديانات سابقة عليه، ومن حيث هو حضارة، إلى حضارات تقدمت الحضارة الإسلامية، متذرعاً بنزعة تاريخية فجة لا ترى في التاريخ إلا تكراراً وفي الإسلام إلا نقلاً وتحويراً وفي المسلمين إلا قطيعاً.
إننا نقدم هذا النموذج من الاستشراق، بالإضافة إلى نماذج أخرى سبق أن قدمناها، وذلك في إطار التعرف على الصورة التي يكونها الغرب عنا وعن تاريخنا. إذ في عملية التعرف، وليس في اجتناب المعرفة والهرب منها، يمكننا أن نكون قادرين على تحديد موقعنا في عالم اليوم المضطرب بالصراعات والتناقضات.
