يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوعاً دقيقاً جديراً بالدراسة؛ فموضوعه مدينة عريقة هي "أصفهان" ويركز على دورها الذي لعبته في مختلف النواحي السياسية والحضارية السلجوقية، فتاريخ المنطقة يفصح عن دور بارز لــ "أصْفّهَان" أثناء الفترات المليئة بالصراعات السياسية، دور تعاظم، فأثمر إستقلال أصْفّهَان السياسي عن الخلافة العبَّاسية، وتنامى دورها ليطرح تساؤلات حول أسباب اختيار أصْفّهَان لتكون عاصمة للدولة السلجوقية؟.
والحصن الأول للدولة الناشئة؟ وكيف أصبحت "أصْفّهان" عاصمة السلاجقة ندّا لبغداد عاصمة الخلافة، وربما عُدت – في بعض الأحيان – أعلى مرتبة منها.
إن أهمية موضوع الكتاب تنبع من كونه يرتكز على إستقراء التاريخ، وربط دراسة التاريخ السياسي لأصْفَهَان السلجوقية وأثرها في بلورة مظاهر الحضارة للكيان السلجوقي كافة، حيث يذكر التاريخ أن أصْفَهَان بلغت أزهى عصورها في عهد السلطان ملكشاه السلجوقي (465- 485هـ / 1072- 1092م)، ولكن تلى عهده إنقسامات كثيرة أدت إلى سنوات من الحروب الداخلية فأنهكت – بلا شك – الثورات الإقتصادية لهذه المدينة.
