في هذا الكتاب مقاربة علمية وموضوعية تسعى إلى فهم السلفيين إنطلاقاً من خلفياتهم الفكرية، الدينية وواقعهم المتأثّر بالتحوّلات الإجتماعية والسياسية، من دون أبلسة أو تبرير، يُعمل الباحث السوسيولوجي الدكتور سعود المولى، حسّه النقديّ المرهف بأسلوب مبسَّط، ويحترم في الوقت نفسه أعلى المعايير العلمية، ليقدّم للقارئ موجزاً عن تطوّر الفكر السلفي بمختلف تشعباته والمراحل التي مرّ بها في الأماكن التي لعب أدواراً مهمة فيها مثل مصر والسعودية وسوريا وأفغانستان ولبنان.
بتناوله هذه المسألة الشائكة، قام المؤلّف بشرح الصلة بين سلفية اللبنانيين والسلفية الوهابية والمؤسسات الدينية السعودية من جهة، والسلفيات العربية كافة من جهة ثانية، ثم تلك السفينة الجديدة الناشطة منذ 11 أيلول؛ وهو حاول رصد كل أشكال وجماعات السلفية اللبنانية التي تأثّرت بالتيارات العربية السائدة وتقديم صورة واقعية موضوعية عن أبرز رجالاتها وعن بداياتها ومآلاتها.
