إن "ييتس أعظم شاعر في عصرنا.." هكذا وصفه إليوت. إنه عقل شعري مثلما هو نظام براعات في التعبير. لكن ييتس، بالنسبة للترجمة، يعد من أكثر الشعراء إفتقاداً لمزاياهم حين يترجمون إلى لغة أخرى. فقصيدته قائمة أصلاً على هذا التوازن العجيب بين الفكرة والعبارة. وعندما يختل التوازن، تختل القصيدة كلها. "محير ييتس في الترجمة. فحين أكون حرفياً في ترجمة بعض عباراته، أخل بسحر العبارة. وحين أريد لها تعبيراً شعرياً أجمل، يحتج علي المعنى". هذه قصائد مختارة من شعر ييتس وشواهد نقدية تعرف به وتكشف عن غالب مزاياه.. "أردت بدءاً أن أكتب عن ييتس بحثاً، دراسة في شعره، وقد أحببته وصحبت قصائده واهتممت بما كتب عنه، لكني رفقت بنفسي وتركت الأمر للأساتذة ذوي الفضل المتخصصين به، فاخترت دراسة الأستاذة أ.ج.ستوك: العنف والنبوءة، من كتابها: "و.ب.ييتس:شعره وفكره"، واخترت دراسة الأستاذ نورمن جيفرز عن "البرج" أهم دواوين الشاعر، من كتابه "و.ب.ييتس إنساناً وشاعراً". فشملت الدراستان أغلب القصائد التي اخترناها والتي شملت قصائد من مجموعة "الوردة" ومن مجموعة "في الغابات السبع" ومن مجموعة "مسؤوليات" ومجموعة "البجعات البرية في كول" ومجموعة "البرج" ومجموعة "السلم اللولبي وقصائد أخرى" ومجموعة "مايكل روبرتس والراقصة" ومجموعة "قمر مكتمل في آذار" ومجموعة "قصائد أخيرة". أتمنى بعد قراءة الدراستين وبعد الإنتهاء من قراءة القصائد، أن يحس القارئ بأن الكتاب قد أدى مهمته في التعريف بهذا الشاعر الكبير.
