أن "ييتس أعظم شاعر في عصرنا".. هكذا وصفه إليوت، هو عقل شعري مثلما هو نظام براعات في التعبير، لكن ييتس بالنسبة للترجمة، من اكثر الشعراء افتقاداً لمزاياهم حين يترجمون الى لغة اخرى، فقصيدته قائمة اصلا على هذا التوازن العجيب بين الفكرة والعبارة. وعندما يختل التوازن، تختل القصيدة كلها، محير ييتس في الترجمة، فحين اكون حرفيا في ترجمة بعض عباراته، اخل بسحر العبارة، وحين اريد لها تعبيراً شعرياً اجمل، يحتج عليَّ المعنى. هذا ما واجهته وانا اترجم بعض قصائده، لهذا، تخليت عن ترجمة بعض من قصائده، شعرت ان الترجمة تضرّ بها او انها تحتاج الى مقدرة ترجمية اكبر من هذه الترجمة المتواضعة التي املك، على اية حال، ما نقدمه اليوم، هي قصائد مختارة كبيرة، وشواهد نقدية تعرف بييتس وتكشف عن غالب مزاياه.
