منذ إعادة إكتشاف ابن خلدون (1332- 1406) في بداية القرن التاسع عشر، لم تتوقف شهرته عن الإتساع، وهو معروف اليوم كواحد من أهم المفكّرين في مجال المجتمع والتاريخ، ولقد تُرجمت السيرة الذاتية والمقدمة، وهي أجزاء من مؤلَّفِهِ الأساسي كتاب العير إلى اللغة الفرنسية، وتم نشرها في مجلّد واحد ضمن "بيبليوتيك دو لا بلياد".
إستطاع عبد السلام شدّادي بحكم إلفته الفريدة مع ابن خلدون أن يعيد توضيعه في هذا الكتاب ضمن السياق الثقافي والسياسي المغربيّ أولاً، ثم المصريّ، وبشكل أوسع ضمن تاريخ الثقافة العربية الإسلامية.
في الوقت ذاته نجده يقوم هنا بعرض وتحليل نظرية الحضارة التي اقترحها المؤرخ المغربي، وكانت بلا شك المحاولة الأولى لإجراء مقاربة علمية وشديدة الدقة للمجتمع البشري؛ كما أنه يعلّق عليها منطلقاً في ذلك من منطقها العميق ومن تمفصلاتها، ومن الأصداء التي كانت لها بين معاصريه.
عبر هذه الدراسة التي ستصير بلا شك من الكلاسيكيات، يسمح لنا عبد السلام شدّادي أن نعرف بشكل أكبر شخصية وعمل مفكِّر عربيّ إستثنائيّ، كما أنه ينطلق من منظور جديد ليعيد طرح مسألة مكانة الثقافة والمجتمعات العربية الإسلامية ضمن التاريخ الكوني لإنبثاق العالم الحديث.
