.... وتاريخ العلم ميدان واسع، ليس من المستطاع شرحه كله في مائة محاضرة أو ألف، ولذا فضلت أن اتناول طائفة من الموضوعات المختارة في الحدود المستطاعة من أن أحاول غير المستطاع، إذ ليس ثمة مكان أو زمان لإثبات كل شيء.
إن ما أقدمه هنا مبني على المصادر الأولى، إذ حرصت دائماً أن أغوص إلى الأعماق، ومع هذا تقصر وثائقنا كثيراً عن الكمال، ومثال ذلك أن الجماعات البشرية البدائية استخدمت كمبية كبيرة من المعرفة قبل أن تدرك حيازتها لهذه المعرفة، وإذ هي لم تدركها فمن أين لنا أن ندركها؟
ومن الناحية الأخرى نجد غالباً أن الوثائق الخاصة بالعلم في مصر وبلاد ما بين النهرية أدق من وثائق العلم الإغريقي، إذ الواقع أن علماء المصريات والأشوريات موفقون في أن لديهم وثائق أصلية، على حين يضطر علماء الهلينيات إلى القنوع بوثائق مجزوءة في مقتبسات وآراء غير أصلية..."
