يتضمَّن كتاب سارتون عن العلم اليونانى تمهيداً لفجر العِلم، ولظهور العلم فى الحضارتين المصرية والبابليَّة الآشورية، ثم بزوغ العلم الأيونى فى القرن السادس قبل الميلاد، ووقفة مع فيثاغورس. بعدها يعرض لتطوُّر الرياضيات والفلك والطب والجغرافيا والتاريخ فى القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد وبخاصة عند المدرسة الأبقراطية ثم يعرض لأفلاطون وأكاديميته ولأرسطو ومدرسته التى عُنِيت بالدراسات الطب يتضمَّن كتاب سارتون عن العلم اليونانى تمهيداً لفجر العِلم، ولظهور العلم فى الحضارتين المصرية والبابليَّة الآشورية، ثم بزوغ العلم الأيونى فى القرن السادس قبل الميلاد، ووقفة مع فيثاغورس. بعدها يعرض لتطوُّر الرياضيات والفلك والطب والجغرافيا والتاريخ فى القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد وبخاصة عند المدرسة الأبقراطية ثم يعرض لأفلاطون وأكاديميته ولأرسطو ومدرسته التى عُنِيت بالدراسات الطبيعيّة والطبّية والإنسانيّة. وفى زمن الإسكندر وتأسيس "الموسيون" (المتحف) يعرض لجهود إقليدس السكندرى ولعلم الفلك عند أريستارخوس وأراتوس ثم لأرشميدس وأبولونيوس، ولدراسة الجغرافيا والتاريخ، ثم الفلك والتكنولوجيا والطب، كما يبيّن كيف اتسعت الدراسة لتشمل كذلك اللغة والفنون و13 ومعرفة الماضى، ثُمَّ يتوقَّف عند مكتبة "الإسكندرية" ودورها المشهود فى ذلك العصر.
