حين كتب مهدي السعيد "سيرته الذاتية" التي بدأت من أزقة الكرخ القديمة كما يروي وصولاً إلى براغ ولندن ودمشق، لم يكن يدور في خلده، أنه سيدوّن بعفوية شائقة جوانب مهمّة من تاريخ محلّة الدوريين بشكل خاص، والمحلّة البغدادية بشكل عام، بكل تناقضاتها الإيجابية والسلبية وعناصر القوة والضعف فيها. وجاءت سيرة مهدي السعيد مزيجاً من ذكريات ومذكرات واستعارات ومراجعات وتجارب وخبر منها ما هو ناجح ومنها ما هو فاشل؛ لكنني بقدر ما حاولت تقديم عرض جاد لتجربة ذاتية وسياسية بامتياز، فإنها في الوقت نفسه حفلت بطرائف وحكايات ومصادفات ممتعة، حاول الكاتب تمليح نصّه لكي لا يأتي ثقيلاً، وقد وضعها بأسلوب مبسّط ويكاد يكون عفوياً، ولعلّها تعكس جوانب من شخصيته المرحة رغم جديّتها.
السيرة الذاتية لمهدي السعيد تضمّنت بوحاً في جزء غير قليل منها، وكشفاً لواقع سوسيوثقافي، حاول أن يعطيه بصمته الخاصة، من خلال استعراض لا يخلو من دهشة الكاتب ذاته الذي اختزن هذا الكمّ الهائل من الصور والمشاهد والأحداث والمفارقات في ذاكرته، وقد يكون مفيداً قراءة هذه المذكرات كحلقة متصلة ومتكاملة، بل ومتراصّة على الرغم من المراحل التي وضعها.
