يعرض الكتاب قصتها الحقيقية مذ ولدت في مومباي مدينة الأكواخ والأزقة الضيقة، لتكن أصغر طفلة تكتب سيرتها الذاتية في الكرة الأرضية. تختارها مصادفات القدر من بين 1500 طفلة لتمثل في فيلم Slumdog Millionaire الذي سجّل أعلى نسبة مشاهدة في العالم وحصد ثمانية أوسكارات. حيث تلاقي نجاحاً باهراً، وتسافر إلى هوليوود لحضور المهرجان وتسلّم الجائزة وتحلّ نزيلة على أفخم الفنادق، حيث يفاجئها كل شيء. تتأجج أحاسيسها ويسيطر عليها حلم الشهرة الواسعة وحياة المشاهير، ولا سيما حين يطلب كبار المشاهير من مثل أنجلينا جولي إمضاءها، لتعود بعد أيام إلى مدينتها نجمة ثرية يتهافت المئات لملاقاتها من سكان وأقرباء ومصوّرين وصحفيين. ويفرض رجال الأمن طوقاً لحمايتها. تعود بشوق إلى أهلها وناسها لتجد بيتها مهدَّماً؛ فتعيش صراعاً صعباً بين حلم أخّاذ عاشته فعلاً وبين واقع مرير وأزقة تبعث على الكآبة والإحباط، وتخلُّف يسرق كل شيء. لكن مخرج الفيلم داني بويل يقدِّم إليها دعماً غير محدود لإعادة بناء البيت ومتابعة الدراسة ويمهّد لها الطريق لكي تصبح ممثلة حقيقية. قصة فيلم أدهش العالم، وقصة بطلته من خلف كواليس حياتها الحقيقية، وعفوية ما تفكِّر فيه هذه الطفلة التي أصبحت ثرية ومشهورة بين ليلة وضحاها، وما يراودها من مشاعر حيال مستقبلها وحيال أهلها: أبيها الذي حاول بيعها يوماً، وأمّها التي تخلَّت عنها طفلة!
