توضح هذه الدراسة عن جوانب مهمة في المجتمع المصري في عصر سلاطين المماليك، وأول هذه الأوضاع الوضع الإجتماعي لفئة المعممين وتميزهم عن باقي طبقات المجتمع، بإستثناء طبقة المماليك الحكام.
والواقع إن المجتمع المصري عصر سلاطين المماليك كان مجتمعاً طبقياً تميزت فيه كل طبقة عن الأخرى.
وقد انفرد المعممون عن بقية طبقات الشعب بمختلف فئاته بالكثير من المميزات، والتي يأتي على رأسها حصولهم على قدر من التعليم لم يتوافر لغيرهم من طبقات الشعب الأخرى، وبذلك صار المعمم مؤهلاً لولاية الوظائف ديوانية كانت، أو دينية حسب تعليمه.
وقد أبرز البحث المكانة السامية التي تمتع بها المعممون في المجتمع المصري على عصر سلاطين المماليك، وكان ذلك صورة لما يتمتع به العلماء المعاصرون من مكانة في شتى أنحاء العالم الإسلامي في تلك الحقبة التاريخية، لا سيما وأن العلم كان مرتبطاً بالدين إلى حد كبير، كما أوضحت هذه الدراسة أن بعض العلماء من المعممين حظوا بشهرة واسعة في الآفاق حتى أن تيمورلنك راسل بعضهم مباشرة، متخطياً السلاطين والأمراء.
واهتمت الدراسة بإبراز التباين بين المعممين موظفي الديوان، والمعممين من العلماء، فأوضحنا أن معممي الديوان هم الموظفون الذين أداروا الشؤون المالية والإدارية في البلاد، وقد غلبت على هؤلاء صفات معينة، فوجدنا أن عدداً كبيرة منهم من الأقباط المصريين والمسالمة والوافدين على مصر، وخاصة من بلاد الشام، وبرع معممو الديوان في الإدارة المالية وديوان الإنشاء.
لذا اعتمد سلاطين المماليك عليهم أكثر من غيرهم، وبفضل تفوق هؤلاء في الحساب ومصطلح الديوان تمكنوا من النهوض بعبء الإدارة المماليكية، وأصبحوا مؤهلين لمباشرة الوظائف الديوانية.
وأما العلماء من المعممين فقد باشروا الوظائف القضائية والتعليمية والدينية.
