يتناول هذا الكتاب الحياة السياسية ومظاهر الحضارة في العراق والمشرق الإسلامي خلال فترة من الفترات الحافلة بالتيارات السياسية والحضارية ذات التأثير العميق في العالم الإسلامي، تلك هي الفترة الممتدة من أوائل القرن الرابع الهجري وحتى ظهور السلاجقة على مسرح الأحداث السياسية في المشرق الإسلامي.
وينقسم الكتاب إلى خمسة أبواب، حيث يتناول المؤلف في الباب الأول الموقف السياسي بالعراق خلال العهد البويهي. ثم يركز اهتمامه في الباب الثاني على دراسة الأوضاع السياسية في الدول الفارسية التي قامت في شرق الدولة الإسلامية، كالدولتين البويهية والسامانية. وفي الباب الثالث، يدرس المؤلف دولة الغزنويين. وفي الباب الرابع يناقش الأوضاع الاقتصادية لتلك الدول المشرقية. أما الباب الخامس والأخير فيمثل دراسة وافية عن مظاهر الحياة الاجتماعية والثقافية بدول المشرق الإسلامي التي جرى دراستها في الأبواب السابقة. والكتاب بما يحتويه من دراسات ثرية وعميقة المضمون، يقدم زادًا تاريخيًا موثقًا لكل باحث مهتم بتاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية السياسي والثقافي، كما يزود القارئ بمعلومات جديدة في مجال تاريخ المشرق الإسلامي الذي لم يكتب عنه الكثير في المكتبة العربية.
