يضمّ هذا الكتاب دراسة انطلقت من مقولات "نظرية التحديث" كمرجعية للتحليل مع مراعاة اختلاف مسيرة التطور التي مرّ بها المجتمع الأردني في خصوصيته العربية الإسلامية. وتبرز أهمية هذه الدراسة في رصدها وتحليلها للاستمرارية والتغير في قيم العمل داخل المجتمع الأردني بهدف مقارنة أوجه الالتقاء والاختلاف في طبيعة منظومة قيم العمل عند كل جيل وانعكاس ذلك على توجهات وتفضيلات الأردنيين نحو العمل. أما هدفها فهو التعرف إذا ما كانت منظومة قيم العمل في المجتمع الأردني تتماشى أو تختلف مع طبيعة التغيرات الاجتماعية الثقافية والاقتصادية عبر مرحلتي: التقليدية التي سادت فيها أعمال الزراعة، والمدارس محدودة العدد، وقيم الجماعة، والعائلة الممتدة، نحو مرحلة التحديث النسبي التي شهدت تحولات اجتماعية واقتصادية انعكست التحولات في تعقيد سوق العمل وتنوعه ونمو المؤسسات البيروقراطية، والزيادة العالية في نسب وأعداد المتعلمين، ومشاركة المرأة في العمل، وزيادة معدل التحضر، وانتشار الوسائل الحديثة للاتصالات في المجتمع الأردني المعاصر وآنياً وكنتيجة لارتباط الأردن بالنظام الرأسمالي العالمي اقتصادياً يشهد الأردن تحولات نحو الخصخصة والمشاركة الواسعة للقطاع الخاص.
