يشكل هذا الكتاب قراءة في كتاب "صفة جزيرة العرب" للهمذاني وهو مصنف فريد في مجال الجغرافيا الإقليمية يمتاز على جميع مصنفات القرنين التاسع والعاشر، ومن أهم ما أنتجه العرب في الجغرافيا. بدأه بمقدمة رياضية جغرافية وافية يورد فيها ذكر المذاهب المختلفة لتحديد الأطوال والعروض كما يورد فيها أيضاً وصفاً عاماً لمناطق الأرض بحسب توزيعها على الأقاليم السبعة.
أما الموضوع الرئيسي في الكتاب فقد كرسه لوصف جزيرة العرب، وهو ينقسم إلى خمسة أبواب رئيسية في وصف تهامة والحجاز ونجد والعروض واليمن. وتحتل اليمن مكان الصدارة في كتابه، حيث نراه يفصل في الكلام على مساكن قبيلة همدان ويذكر حقائق مهمة عن شمال الجزيرة العربية، ولكنه يختم كلامه أيضاً باليمن ويفرد قسماً خاصاً لذكر عجائبها، أو على الأصح خصائصها التي لا يشاركها فيها بلد آخر. ونفس هذا الطابع الفريد تحمله مجموعة "الأشعار الجغرافية" التي استخرجها من دواوين الشعراء الأقدمين والوارد فيها ذكر الأسماء الجغرافية، وتُضاف إليها أرجوزة جغرافية طويلة تقع في خمسة قصائد ومائة وسبعة وعشرين بيتاً هي أشبه بملحق للكتاب يصف فيها صاحبها أحمد بن عيسى الرّداعي طريق الحج في بلاد العرب.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب الذي توالى على شرحه كثير من علماء الجغرافيا والأدب، فقد عمد كلٌ من عارف أحمد عبد الغني والدكتور خالد أحمد الملا السويدي على تحقيقه وشرحه بدراسة شاملة جاءت تحت عنوان (جزيرة العرب وأسماء بلادها، وأوديتها، ومن يسكنها) وانصب الجهد الرئيسي للتحقيق في إعادة نشر الكتاب على توثيق الأشعار من المصادر، والمظان التي وردت ثم ضبط معظم اسماء الأماكن، ضبطاً صحيحاً استناداً إلى معجم ما استعجم، والمصادر اليمنية الحديثة التي ضبط اسماء الأماكن، وكذلك المصادر التي ضبطت أسماء الأماكن في الجزيرة العربية كالشيخ حمد الجاسر، والدكتور الشايع، مع فهرسة الكتاب فهرسة شاملة ووافية.
