في كتابه هذا ، يتحدث الدكتور جان نعّوم طنّوس عن أحمد فارس الشدياق الذي تعرف عليه في كتابه القيم : " السّاق على الساق في ما هو للفارياق " فاطلع على فجيعته بأخيه أسعد الذي ترك المذهب الماروني واعتنق المذهب الإنجيلي ( البروتستانتي ) ، ثم اعتنق أخيراً الإسلام !!
يرى المؤلف أن الشدياق يؤمن بحرية الإعتقاد الشخصية ، ويعتبر أنه لا يجوز لأي سلطة زمنية أو دينية أن تتدخل في أمر يخص الإنسان في قرارة نفسه . فأن يكون المرء إنجيلياً ( من المذهب البروتستانتي ) أو كاثوليكياً ( مارونياً ) أو يهودياً ، فتلك مسألة تتعلق بخيارات الشخص ... والشدياق يصوّر رجال الدين بأنهم يفرضون وصايتهم على الناس في كتابه " بحوار يجري بين الضوطار ( الضخم اللئيم ) أي بين المطران الماروني ، وبين الفارياق ( الكاتب نفسه ) ، وفحوص الحوار الخلاق على المساومة في سلعة ، والمقصود بالسلعة ، الإيمان المذهبي ... " .
يسلّط الكتاب الضوء على فكر ونضال ورسالة أحمد فارس الشدياق ( أديب الأنوار ) الذي استمات في الدفاع عن حرية الإنسان ، وحقه في الإختيار ، وانتقد الكنيسة الغربية وفساد السلطة ، ويقدم براهينه من الكتب السماوية نفسها ، ويؤكد على حلم الشدياق البعيد ، النائي " نحو الحقيقة والجمال والكمال " .

ملاحظة : لم اذكر لماذا انتقد الشدياق الكهنة ، وأسلم ، لأن السبب أن البطريرك الماروني يوسف حبيش أمر بسجن أخيه وتعذيبه حتى الموت ، لتركه المذهب الماروني إلى المذهب البروتستانتي .
