ولد ريموند كارفر في بلدة كلاتسكاني في ولاية أوريغون وترعرع في ياكيما بواشنطن، عكس في قصصه حياة الطبقة العاملة، وتعج قصصه بشخصيات من الطبقة الوسطى الأدنى.
ولقد وصف الناقد توماس ر. إدواردز عالم كارفر القصصي بأنه مكان يخاف فيه الناس حتى من إحتمال ألا يدور محرك سيارتهم ومن تهديد خطر البطالة والإفلاس، ولا يشعرون بالسعادة إلا حين يدخنون أو يشربون.
