في هذا الكتاب يحيط الدكتور فوزي حسن الزبيدي بأصول التحليل السياسي في ضوء نظريات السياسات الدولية، ويأتي على دور المحلل السياسي وأهميته في كشف الحقائق وتفسير التداخلات والغموض والتعقيد في السياسات الدولية، خاصة أولئك المحللين الذين يعملون بالقرب من دوائر صنع القرار، الذين يُحتِم عليهم واجبهم تقديم تفسيرات دقيقة ومبكرة وعلى الدوام. حيث ازدادت وبشكل ملحوظ أهمية التحليل السياسي في الآونة الأخيرة، وذلك بسبب حجم الغموض والتعقيد الذي بات يكتنف العلاقات الدولية...
هذه القراءة لِما آلت إليه السياسة الدولية يتم مقاربتها في هذا الكتاب وفقاً لنظريات التحليل السياسي وأدوات التحليل المرتبطة بها، لذلك تكمن المشكلة التي يحاول مؤلف هذا الكتاب معالجتها، في كيفية تفسير السياسات الدولية اعتماداً على مدارس العلاقات الدولية نفسها، كالمدرسة الواقعية التي تضم أربع نظريات هي "الواقعية الكلاسيكية، والواقعية الجديدة، والواقعية البنيوية الدفاعية، والواقعية البنيوية الهجومية، وكذلك المدرسة المثالية التي تضم ثلاث نظريات هي "النظرية الليبرالية، والنظرية الليبرالية الجديدة، والنظرية الإنجليزية"، فضلاً عن المدرسة الماركسية ونظريات اتخاذ القرار في السياسة الخارجية.
إلى ذلك، اجتهد المؤلف في بيان أهمية أدوات التحليل ممثلة بأداة التفكير الاستراتيجي والتخطيط الاستراتيجي ومنهجية التحليل الجيوسياسي، إضافة إلى منهجيات الدراسات المستقبلية، مع الإشارة إلى أن هذا الكتاب لا يحصر تركيزه بنقد نظريات السياسات الدولية، بقدر ما يركِّز على الاستفادة القصوى من تلك النظريات لدعم وإسناد عملية التحليل السياسي، وذلك من خلال كمٍّ كبير من الفرضيات والتساؤلات التي اشتقت من كل نظرية علمية، لغرض تبسيط عملية التحليل للمحلل السياسي، فما على المحلل سوى الإجابة عن التساؤلات أو إثبات تلك الفرضيات أو دحضها. وعليه يكون هذا الكتاب كما أراد له مؤلفه: المرجع الإرشادي للمحلل السياسي لدعم صناع القرار.
