أصل هذا الكتاب (مقال) نشره المؤلف محمد سعيد العرفي في مجلة الرابطة الإسلامية الصادرة في دمشق سنة (1352ه) تحت عنوان "أخلاق رسول الله محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم" والمقال يبدو أنه خطبة توجه بها المؤلف إلى الناس في مناسبة ما إذ يفتتحه بعبارة: "أيها السادة، في هذه الساعة القصيرة لا أستطيع الإعراب عن بعض فوائد العلم ...". أما عن مضمون الكتاب / المقال فهو التأكيد على الأخلاق الفاضلة التي يجب أن تتحلى بها الأمم والناس، وأن العلم لا ينفع بشيء إذا لم يتلازم مع الأخلاق "لأن العلم لا يستطيع أن يقوم بحفظ كيان الأمة أذا لم تشد أزره الأخلاق العالية المجيدة ...". أما النموذج أو المثال الذي يجب اتباعه فهو ما عرفه العرب عن حياة سيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، ولهذا يتحدث في الكتاب عن حياة سيدنا محمد القائل "بعثت لأتمم مكارم الأخلاق" حيث يورد المؤلف الأحاديث التي تؤكد على أخلاقيات سيد المرسلين مثل "الأمانة والصدق"، و "الشجاعة المادية والمعنوية" ، "الحلم والعفو" و "الوفاء ومحافظة العهد" ، و"الإنبساط للناس" و "التواضع" وقد شكلت هذه العناوين بعض أخلاق رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بصورة إجمالية ومختصرة، وهي نموذج من خلقه صلى الله عليه وسلم "يجب على الأمة أن تقتدي به". وأخيراً يذكر المؤلف القارىء بالآية الكريمة قال الله تعالى: "يا أيها الذين آمنوا أطيعوا الله وأطيعوا الرسول وأولى الأمر منكم (...)"، إلى آخر الآية.
