إن موضوع الشخصية يهم كل فرد فينا بطريقة مباشرة أو غير مباشرة، إذ أنه يبحث، ليس فقط فيما نحن عليه، وإنما أيضاً فيما نحب أن نكون عليه، أن يدل على قدر إشتراكنا في أمور الحياة من حولنا وعلى محاولتنا لحماية ذاتنا.
وإن مصطلح الشخصية رغم شيوعه وألفته، فهو من أصعب الإصطلاحات فهماً وتفسراً، إن كل واحد منا يستخدم هذا الإصطلاح بطريقة تلقائية في الحياة اليومية، ولكنه في الوقت نفسه قد يكون من الصعب على أي واحد منا أن يضع له تعريفاً أو وصفاً محدداً.
في حديثنا العادي نقول: "فلان "عديم الشخصية"، أو "ليس له شخصية"، ونصف آخر بأنه "قوي الشخصية"، بينما نصف غيره بأنه "ضعيف الشخصية"!.
هذا الكلام يفتقر إلى الأسس النظرية والعلمية المنتجة في حقل دراسات الشخصية، ضمن تطور العلوم السيكولوجية، التي ترفض مطلقاً فكرة إنعدام الشخصية، حيث لا يوجد أي إنسان في العالم بلا شخصية، وهذه الشخصية، التي يمكن إخضاعها لمحاولات التحليل والفهم، ولعلاج إنحرافاتها السلوكية، النفسية والعقلية، لا يمكن أن توصف بالصنف أو القوة، وإن عالم "الشخصية" قد أرهق علماء النفس، وهم يحاولون إقتحامه وفك رموزه المعقدة، ودراسة عناصره المركبة، سواء في حالات سوائها أو إنحرافها.
ومن هذا المنطلق، فإن الشخصية يمكن النظر إليها على أنها طريقة سلوك الفرد في المواقف المختلفة، وليس شيئاً يملكه ذلك الشخص أو يفتقده؛ ولقد وضع الدكتور الفرد أدلر هذا المبدأ: "ليس لدينا مشاكل في حياتنا سوى مشاكل إجتماعية؟ وتلك المشاكل الإجتماعية يمكن حلها فقط إذا كنا مهتمين بالآخرين"؛ وبعكس أولئك الذين يؤمنون بالعمل مع الناس، يشير دكتور الفرد أدلر: "الفرد الغير مهتم بزميله الإنسان لديه أكثر صعوبة في الحياة ويعطي أكبر الضرر للآخرين".
بهذه الحقائق، يقدم المؤلف لقارئ هذا الكتاب الذي يعالج ويقدم الشخصية الجذابة المنتصرة بتكيّفها الناجح مع مطالب الحياة الإجتماعية الحديثة.
