لقد أكثر المؤلفون من شرح ديوان أبي الطيب المتنبي، واهتموا بمعانيه، وكانت لهم مؤلفات منوعة المقاصد، فمنهم من قصد المعاني دون الغريب، ومنهم من قصد الإعراب باللفظ القريب، ومنهم من أطال فيه وأسهب، ومنهم من قصد التعصب عليه، ونسبه إلى غير ما كان قصد إليه، فعمد المؤلف أبو البقاء العكبري إلى جمع كتابه هذا من أقاويل شراحه الأعلام معتمداً على أقوال ابن جني وأبو العلاء وأبو زكريا يحيى بن علي الخطيب، وأبو الحسن علي بن أحمد وابن فورجه وأبو الفضل العروضي وأبي بكر الخوارزمي، وأبو محمد الحسن ابن وكيع، وابن الأفليلي. وجعل غرائب إعرابه أولاً، وغرائب لغته ثانياً، ومعانيه ثالثاً. وجاء هذا المؤلف ضمن أربعة أجزاء.
