يعد شرح المعري "معجز أحمد" من أوفى الشروح استقصاة وإثباتاً لشعر المتنبي، فقد أثبتت فيه من شعر الشاعر ما لا يكاد الباحث يجده في سواه علماً بأن أباً العلاء شرح ديوان المتنبي مرتين في كتابين مختلفين: الأول: سماه (اللامع العزيزي) عمله للأمير عزيز الدولة الملك بن صالح بن مرداس (449 هـ) وهي السنة التي مات فيها أبو العلاء، الثاني: سماه (معجز أحمد) وهو هذا الديوان الذي بين يديك عزيزي القارئ ، يقول المحقق بعد جهد جهيد في ضبط هذا النص، ولست أحسب أني قد وفيته حقه، فحسب هذا العمل أنه سيفتح الطريق أمام الباحثين حول هذا الكتاب والدارسين له إلى مزيد من البحث حول موضوعه، بعد أن اتحفنا بالشرح بعض الأبيات والقطعه التي لم ترد فيه.
