إن الدراسات الأدبية في اى مجال من مجالاتها وشعبة من شعاب تخصصها تعتمد على النصوص التى هى مادة الدرس الأدبي تاريخا ونقدا ومقارنة وليس من المقصور أن تؤرخ لعصر من العصور أو أديب من الأدباء دون ان نجمع نصوصه ونحققها ونحقق من نسبتها إليه او ان نشتغل بدراسة نقدية للأدب من غير استيعاب لنصوص موضوعاتها وتتبع الظواهر الأسلوبية أن نشتغل بدراسة نقدية للأدب من غير استيعاب لنصوص موضوعات وتتبع الظواهر الأسلوبية والخصائص الفنية بالفحص والاستقراء كذلك لا تصح دراسة مقارنة بمعزل عن النصوص ولمح ظواهر التأثر أو التشابة والاختلاف بينها ثم تأييدها بالتتبع الاستقرائي في نصوصها المحققة وعليه فقد انصرف المؤلف إلى دراسة أبا العلاء والمتنبي ويدرس عصرها وعلاقتهما مع اهل عصرهما من وزارة وامراء وكتاب وأدباء وشعراء وقادة وسوقة وأخ يقابل ويضبط ويخرج ليخرج هذا الكتاب "وهو شرح ديوان المتنبي لأبي العلاء المعري)
