على الرغم من صدور عدة ترجمات لهذه الرواية، فإن القرّاء دأبوا على السؤال عن ترجمة الدكتور سامي الدروبي الذي عرفوه في ترجماته المميّزة لأعمال دوستويفسكي.
وها هي دار التنوير تعيد نشر هذه الترجمة لهذا الكتاب العظيم الذي يصعب إختصاره، أو تلخيصه، فهذه الرواية التي لم تكفّ عن إثارة إعجاب ملايين القراء، وتعتبر من أكثر الروايات قراءة على مرّ العصور، كتب عنها شعراء وفلاسفة ونقّاد... حتى إن مؤلفه نفسه يقول عن عمله إنه: "ليس رواية، ولا هو قصيدة، ولا هو سجلّ لوقائع تاريخية، إنه ما أراد المؤلف، وما استطاع، أن يعبّر عنه في هذا الشكل الذي عبّر عنه".
ولذلك فإن كل قارئ سيصل في قراءته إلى نتائج تخصّه من بين ما أراده المؤلف وتحدّث عنه هو نفسه في المقدّمة.
بالفعل إن هذا الكتاب يتجاوز التصنيف في فئة من فئات التأليف الأدبي، فهو إضافة إلى قيمته الأدبية، وقيمته التاريخية، يقدّم رؤى حول مسائل كبرى: حول تعارض حب الحياة مع مأساة الحروب، والدور الذي يمكن أن يلعبه الأشخاص في مجرى التاريخ، ودور الشعب بكل فئاته... فعبر هذا الكتاب نرى المسار الإنساني من جهتين: جهة الفرد وجهة الجماعة، ونتأمل في المصير الإنساني على طريق الحياة والموت.
إنها رواية تنفذ إلى روح المجتمع الروسي، معبَّراً عنها في أحداث ووقائع وشخصيات يرسم تولستوي لكل منها دوراً يعبّر من خلاله عن نفاذ بصيرته في رؤية النفس الإنسانية عموماً.
للأسف، لم يستطع الدكتور سامي الدروبي أن يكمل ترجمة هذا الكتاب، وقد ترجم لنا جزأين من هذا الكتاب الضخم، وأكمل عمله الدكتور صباح الجهيم.
