الكونت ليف نيكولايافيتش تولستوي (9 سبتمبر 1828- 20 نوفمبر 1910) من عمالقة الروائيين الروس ومصلحا اجتماعيا وداعية سلام ومفكرا أخلاقيا وعضوا مؤثرا في أسرة تولستوي ، يعد من أعمدة الأدب الروسي في القرن التاسع عشر والبعض يعده من أعظم الروائيين على الإطلاق.
أشهر أعماله روايتي (الحرب والسلام) و(أنا كارنينا) وهما يتربعان على قمة الأدب الواقعي، فهما يعطيان صورة واقعية للحياة الروسية في تلك الحقبة الزمنية.
كفيلسوف أخلاقي اعتنق أفكار المقاومة السلمية النابذة للعنف وتبلور ذلك في كتاب (مملكة الرب داخلك) وهو العمل الذي أثر على مشاهير القرن العشرين مثل المهاتماغاندي ومارتن لوثر كينج في جهادهما الذي اتسم بسياسة المقاومة السلمية النابذة للعنف.

رائعة الكاتب الروسي ليو تولستوي, رواية أدبية تدور أحداثها في بداية القرن التاسع عشر, مع اجتياح القائد الفرنسي نابليون بونابارت اللأراضي الروسية, ودخول موسكو وانسحابه بعد الخيبة والفشل في مواجهة الشتاء الروسي القارص، ورفض القيصر الروسي الاستسلام. أول إصدار للكتاب كان في عام 1869. بين أحداث الحرب والسلم تدور أحداث الرواية التي دمج تولستوي فيها شخصيات عديدة, رئيسية وثانوية, تاريخية وأخرى خيالية, ابتدعها تولستوي نفسه. كما وتعطي صورة واسعة وموضحة لحياة الترف التي عاشتها طبقة النبلاء في روسيا في عهد الحكم القيصري. هناك من يعتقد بان الشخصيات الرئيسية كبيير بزوكوب والامير أندري تمثل اوجه مختلفه في شخصية تولستوي نفسه.
