أن الحكايات العشر المجموعة تحت هذا العنوان لا تتيح بدقة الترتيب الزمني لأعمال تولستوي، فنشرها جاء بعد آنا كارينينا 1877، لكننا نضعها، لأسباب عملية في المجلد نفسه الذي يضم كتب القراءة الأربع، وإن كانت تتباين فيما بينها تبايناً موحياً: إننا نرى تولستوي صاحب النهج الثاني الذي تُهيمن عليه هموم التثقيف هو الذي يظهر فيها.
لسنا هنا بإزاء مدوّن وقائع طبقات المجتمع الراقية - كما هي الحال في الحرب والسلم وآنا كارينينا - لكننا بإزاء الكاتب الذي تتملكه الآلام الإنجيلية وحياة سواد الشعب الذي يرى فيه وحده الخلاص والذي يرغب به، من أجل ذلك بالذات، أن يساعده فكرياً بكتب القراءة الأربعة وأخلاقياً بحكايات الإنجيل الذي يعتقد أنه قد فهم رسالته فهماً كلياً بعد أزمته الدينية في سنوات 1880.
ولذلك، يَعْزم، كما نعلم، أن يتنكر لنهجه السابق، أنه لا يريد بعد الآن أن يكون الروائي الشاهد والحكم على المجتمع الراقي: إنه يرغب بحرارة أن يكلّم الذين ينتظرون من الكتّاب رسالة جوهرية، لا تسلية.
ولقد أسرّ ذات يوم إلى الكاتب دانيلف سكي: أن ملايين الروس الذين يعرفون القراءة، يظلّون أمامنا فاغري أفواههم مثل صغار الغربان، ويقولون لنا: أيها السادة الكتاب، ألقوا في أفواهنا غذاء فكرياً جديراً بكم وبنا، اكتبوا لنا نحن أيضاً، نحن العطاش إلى الكلمة الحية والأدبية.
