The Arab- Islamic civilization represents one of the most creative enterprises in human history. In selecting the topics included in this survey, the objective was to introduce the student to some of the intellectual and cultural achievements of the civilization since its emergence.
In many ways, the text at hand is a historical study that has at least as much to do with interpreting the past as with gathering “the fact”. To be sure, all interpretations are not created equal. Some are more cogent than others. Some have more evidence in their favor. Some are false and some are lies. So how do we know? How do we interpret? We converse well, and we keep conversing.
We approach, even if we never fully attain, the truth. The system of knowledge we call Humanism and the idea not only of learning itself but also of the environment of learning in which argumentation, disputation and dissent are the order of the day, are not exclusively Western in which concepts, they exist in all traditions including the Arab- Muslim one.
