شغف النسائي منذ صغره بعلوم الحديث، وواظب علي حضور حلقاته وسماعه وحفظه ودرسه وفهمه، وقد سجل في أسانيده أسماء الذين تلقي عنهم، وقد كان النسائي ورعا تقياً، بلغ الذروة في الدقة والتحري والامانة العلمية، و كان من الأئمة المعدودين، متفوقاً علي اهل عصره، متقدماً عليهم، ملماً بدقائق الحديث ورجاله من حيث الجرح والتعديل، وقد بلغ منزلة رفيعة ومكانة سامية.
وقد قال بعضهم: لما ألف النسائي السنن الكبري أهداه إلي امير الرملة، فقال له الأمير: أكل ما في هذا صحيح؟ قال:لا، قال: فجرد الصحيح منه، فصنف المجتبي، وقيل المجتني بالنون، والأول هو المشهور المتفق عليه.
وهو ما يحتويه هذا الكتاب بمجلداته الأربعة وأجزائه الثمانية، بالاضافة إلي كتاب "زهر الربي علي المجتبي" للحافظ الجلال السيوطي مع تحقيقات مقتبسة من حاشية السندي.
