للدعاء أهمية كبرى في الدين الإسلامي، فهو في مضمونه طاعة لله وامتثال لأمره وهو عبادة، لا بلَ هو مخ العبادة، كما قال الله تعالى: (وما خلقت الجن والإنس إلا ليعبدون)، وهذا يعني ان الله قد أجاز لعباده مناجاته والتقرب إليه عن طريق الدعاء، وما بين أيدينا كتاب قيم فهو على صغر حجمه فإنه جليل في مضامينه غني. بما فيه من أدعية تنفع المسلم في الدنيا والآخرة مؤلفه زاهد عابد هو "رضي الدين علي بن موسى بن طاووس العلوي الفاطمي" جمع لنا في كتابه هذا أفضل الدعاء من هنا جاءت تسميته بـ(المجتنى من الدعاء المجتنى) وعنه يقول: فإني وجدت دعوات لطيفة ومهمات شريفة وقد سميتها بـ "المجتنى من الدعاء المجتبى" وجعلت أولها ما نقلته من الجزء الرابع من كتاب "دفع الهموم والأحزان وقمع الغموم والأشجان" تأليف أحمد بن داود النعماني...".
من عناوين الكتاب نذكر: دعاء النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) عند الكرب والفم، دعاء للعدو تقوله في وجهه، للسلطان إذا خفته، دعاء يعقوب ويوسف (عليه السلام) علَمه جبرائيل وهو في الجب، دعاء الصادق على داود بن علي، دعاء من أحوجه الفقر لخدمة السلطان...إلخ.
