ألّف في الشمائل فحول العلماء قديماً وحديثاً، وأوردوا فيها الأحاديث التي جمعت شمائل النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) الخَلْيقة والخُلُقية. ومن تلك المصنفات في الشمائل وصفات النبي الكريم (صلى الله عليه وسلم) كتاب "أخلاق النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) لكلّ من: محمد بن عبد الله الوراق (ت 349 هـ)، ومحمد بن حيان (354 هـ)، كما أن منها كتاب :أخلاق النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) وآدابه، لعبد الله بن محمد، المعروف بأبي الشيخ الأصبهاني (ت 396 هـ)، بالإضافة إلى كتاب "الشمائل" لأبي العباس جعفر بن محمد المستغفري (ت 432 هـ) وكتاب "الأنوار في شمائل النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) المختار" للحسين بن مسعنود البغوي (ت 516 هـ). هذا وإن من أعظم وأهم ما تم تأليفه في هذا المجال في الإسلام كتاب "شمائل النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) لقلّم الرواية وعالم الرواية الإمام الترمذي المتوفي سنة (279 هـ).
وقد ذكر في هذا الكتاب ماجاء في خلق النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، وخاتم النبوة، وشعر الرسول (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، وشيبه، وكمله، ولباسه، ونعله، وخاتمه، وسيفه، ودرعه، وعمامته، ومشيته، وجلسته، وخبزه، وإدامة، وكيف كان كلامه، وما جاء في صفه مُزاحه، وعبادته، وتواضعه، إلى آخر ماجاء في هذا الكتاب الجميل الممتع. ونظراً لأهمية الكتاب فقد عمد العلّامة إلى شرحه، واسماً هذا الشرح بـ "الوصائل في شرح الشمائل".
ومن خلال هذا الشرح يتعرف القارئ على ما كان عليه الرسول (صلى الله عليه وسلم) من الخلق، وما كان متجلياً به من الشمائل الكريمة، مما يجعله على الاهتداء بهديه، والتخلق بأخلاقه، والاقتباس من نوره، في زمن كاد كثير من المسلمين أن ينسوا قول الله عزّ وجلّ ((لقد كان لكم في رسول الله أسوة حسنة لمن كان يرجو الله واليوم الآخر وذكر الله كثيراً)). هذا وقد اعتمد الشارح في عمله هذا على شرح المحدث عبد الرؤوف المناوي المصري المطبوع على هامش كتاب "جمع الوسائل في شرح الشمائل)) تأليف الشيخ العلّامة على بن سلطان محمد القادري، إلى جانب ذلك قام الشارح بتخريج أحاديث الكتاب، مبيّناً درجته، مترجماً للرواة في أول حديث رواه. هذا وقد تم إغناء هذا الشرح، بموجز سيرة الرسول (صلى الله عليه وسلم) لتناسبها مع هذه الشمائل.
