طالت إقامة عبد الله وأسرته في إيطاليا لأكثر من أسبوعين استمتع الجميع خلالها بالطعام الإيطالي وبالإنفاق الحر غير المقيد للنقود. والأخير كان بالذات رائعاً لأنهم جربوه لأول مرة في حياتهم، ففي الإتحاد السوفيتي كانت النقود متوفرة لرخص البضائع لكن الأخيرة كانت نادرة وتحتاج علاقات خاصة للحصول عليها. أما في مصر فقد كانت البضائع موجودة، وبالأخص بعد سنوات الإنفتاح الإقتصادي، لكن النقود كانت أبداً لا تكفي. والآن بعد سنة واحدة من الإعارة لليبيا والإقامة في إيطاليا حلت الأسرة هذه المعادلة الصعبة. وتذكر عبد الله في هذه الأثناء المثل الإنجليزي الذي يقول: "لابد من وجود مشكلة ما، فعندما تكون شاباً تملك الصحة والوقت ولا تملك النقود. وإذا أصبحت رجلاً فأنت تملك الصحة والنقود ولا تملك الوقت. أما وأنت عجوز فأنت تملك الوقت والنقود ولا تملك الصحة."
