لقد كان المسرح العربي في تاريخه الحديث يعيش تجريباً خاصاً به نابعاً من تراثه. فالمسرح العربي هو محاولة لمسرحة قصصية مبنية على الغناء والسرد والقص الذي يمثل علاقة أساسية لفنون الفرجة الشعبية العربية.
والمسرح الشعري العربي قد مر بمراحل تطور منذ أن كتب شوقي مسرحياته حتى كتابة صلاح عبد الصبور للمسرح وهو تطور اعتمد اعتماداً كبيراً على تطور الشعر، وما زاد على ذلك في الحرفية وتقنية المسرح إنما هو امتداد التطور الذي حدث للمسرح العربي. ويمكن أن نسمى جميع هذه المراحل فواصل في حركة مسرحية شعرية واحدة يمكن تسميتها بفترة نشأة المسرحية الشعرية العربية. المبنية على أسس الفرجة الشعبية في غنائيتها وسردها وحكيها.
