تناقش هذه الدراسة أهمية دور الإدارة المتكاملة للموارد المائية في تحقيق التنمية المستدامة، وكذلك أهمية دور الموارد غير التقليدية في سد الفجوة بين الطلب على الموارد المائية والمتاح من هذه الموارد في ظل شح الموارد المائية المتجددة واستنزافها والضغط على الموارد المائية الجوفية غير المتجددة لدى دول مجلس التعاون لدول الخليج العربية، وزيادة الطلب المستمرة؛ نتيجة معدلات التنمية المرتفعة في القطاعات التنموية المختلفة. وتستعرض الدراسة كذلك الموارد المائية المتاحة حالياً واستخداماتها، وأهمية التوسع في إنتاج الموارد المائية غير التقليدية، ودور البحث العلمي والتطوير التقني في إيجاد البدائل والطرائق المناسبة، التي تساعد على تخفيض تكاليف إنتاج مثل هذه الموارد. كما تناقش الدراسة سبل إدارة الموارد المائية التقليدية وغير التقليدية معاً، بشكل متكامل؛ لتحقيق التنمية المستدامة لدى دول مجلس التعاون. وتحدد الدراسة المعوقات التي تقف حائلاً دون تطوير خطة متكاملة لإدارة الموارد المائية في المنطقة بشكل مستدام. وقد تم تحديد الخيارات والبدائل المتاحة لتنمية هذه الموارد والمقارنة بين هذه الخيارات والبدائل فنياً وإقتصادياً وبيئياً. وقد تطرق البحث إلى أهمية المحافظة على الموارد المائية من التلوث وترشيد الإستهلاك، والعوامل التي تساعد على ذلك، وأثرها إجتماعياً وإقتصادياً وبيئياً.
