شكل كل من سيمون دو بوفوار وجان بول سارتر القوة الفكرية للقرن العشرين، البعض أطلق على سارتر اسم أبو الوجودية، ولكن ربما من الأكثر دقة أن نسميه معهم الحركات الفلسفية.
وعندما كتبت سيمون دو بوفوار كتاب "الجنس الآخر" في العام 1949 وضعت الأساس الفكري للموجة الثانية من النسوية التي تفجرت خلال الستينيات.
تصف سيمون في هذا الكتاب السنوات العشر الأخيرة من حياة سارتر، دون أن تخفي عن القارئ أدق التفاصيل المتعلقة بحياته اليومية، الثقافية والفكرية، ومرضه ومن ثم موته، قد يستمتع المرء أو لا يستمتع بهذا التوثيق الصريح لأيام سارتر الأخيرة، مع هذا لا يمكن إلا أن نعجب بشجاعتها وصدقها وإخلاصها لقناعاتها ولسارتر أيضاً.
بعد موته في 15 إبريل 1980 قالت: "لقد فرقتنا وفاته، ووفاتي لن تجمعنا، هكذا هي الحياة".
