لقد أجاد الباحث أسكومب في التأريخ لهذه المرحلة بكثير من البراعة والموضوعية، مستنداً في ذلك على كمية ضخمة من الوثائق العثمانية التي، ربما، ترى النور لأول مرة في هذا الكتاب المرجع، ويرجع المتابع المدقق لهذه المرحلة الشبه الدقيق بينها وبين ما نشهده اليوم على ساحة الجزيرة العربية من صراع على النفوذ المحلي والإقليمي والعالمي.
ويلحظ، فقط، تغير أسماء الأمراء والحكام محلياً، وحلول أميركا محل بريطانيا، وتركيا الحديثة محل السلطنة العثمانية، وريثتها الشرعية، والطامحة إلى لعب الدور نفسه، مع مزيد من القوة، وفي أيامنا هذه.
أما الطموح الغربي إلى تأمين الطرق الآمنة للتجارة البحرية، فقد استبدل بالطموح إلى الإستيلاء الكامل على منابع النفط، الثروة التي لا تدانيها ثروة أخرى في العالم كله.
كتاب جدير بالقراءة، حقاً.
