قاد الهاشميون أول ثورة عربية قومية دفاعاً عن الأرض والهوية العربية، والتف العرب جميعاً حولهم حين بايعوا الشريف "الحسين بن علي" ملكاً عليهم، ولكنه رفض ذلك لعدم سعيه إلى جاه أو طعمه بنفوذ، فقد كان أميراً على مكة المكرمة، ولكن كبار وجهاء العرب وشيوخهم أصروا على قبوله المبايعة لثقتهم به التي كانت تفوق كل حدود، حتى أنهم علقوا مشاركتهم في الثورة بشرط قبوله المبايعة، فقد كان يتمتع بإحترام وتقدير جميع العشائر والقبائل لأفعاله وأقواله الصادقة وأخلاقه ودينه، منذ أن كان عمه الشريف "عبد الله" أمير مكة يعتمد عليه في المهام التي يرسله بها إليهم.
وكان "نضال الشريف الحسين" فيما بعد في سبيل الأمة العربية ومبادئه القومية سبباً في قضائه لسنوات طويلة من عمره في المنفى، وما كان ليخشى نفياً ولا عدواً بقدر ما كان يخشى من التاريخ، حيث قال: (إنني لا أخشى من شيء بقدر ما أخشى من التاريخ) فكانت هذه فكرة الكتاب بالعمل على البحث وجمع الحقائق عما أراد "الشريف الحسين" أن تعرفه الأجيال العربية القادمة بتفاصيله، وكان يخشى عليه من أي تحريف أو تغيير ويحرص على أن ينقل صحيحاً.
