هل تؤثر "الشخصيات" و"المذاهب" فى التاريخ؟ بتعبير آخر: هل تؤثر "الذات" فى التاريخ الاجتماعى؟, الذات هنا منظورا إليها من زاوية السيكولوجيا الفردية والجمعية, ومن زاوية العقائد الاجتماعية والسياسية. أم التارخ مدفوع ب"الموضوع" فقط..؟ أى بالواقع المادى, أى ذلك الواقع الموجود موضوعيا وفى استقلال عن وعى الإنسان به أو معرفته؟ هذا سؤال قديم جديد فى الفلسفة, فمن حيث المبدأ, طرح السؤال: هل هناك حتمية أو ضرورة فى الطبيعة والمجتمع أصلا؟
وفى المجتمع: هل هناك تطور أو تقدم حتمى أو ضرورى؟ وفى حالة الإجابة بنعم, فإن أصحاب الإجابة اختلفوا حول معنى الحتمية: وهل هى حتمية موضوعية خالصة, مدفوعة بالواقع الموجود موضوعيا, أم هى حتمية ذاتية أساسا أى مدفوعة بإرادة الإنسان او أفكاره أو رغباته؟ أم الحتمية والضرورة قائمة على مزيج من الذات والموضوع؟
إن موضوعنا هنا هو شخصيات ومذاهب فكرية, دارت فى فلك سائر بين الثقافة والسياسة, وكانت لها فاعليتها الاجتماعية القوية على المستوى العربى عموما والمصرى خصوصا. وينقسم الكتاب إلى بابين: يتناول الأول شخصيات عربية متنوعة فى طابعها ودروها, من على بن أبى طالب إلى طه حسين إلى عبد الناصر, إلى ساطع الحصرى إلى عصمت سيف الدولة. أما الثانى فيعرض لبعض الرؤى الفكرية المنبثة فى شواهد تاريخ قديم كأبى الهول والهرم, وفى معالم فكر معاصر مثل مفهوم "التحديث" والذى نعارضه بمفهوم آخر مقابل هو "استئناف التطور الحضارى, العربى الإسلامى", ومثل مفهوم "الليبرالية".
