وفي هذا العمل ، الذي يتخذ شكل رحلة إلى داخل بلاد المغرب ، يكتشف القارىء أولى ملامح الإحتكاك السياسي والثقافي بين الغرب الأوروبي ممثلاً بإسبانيا والمغرب ، بوابة العالم العربي والإسلامي الغربية ، بُعيد منتصف القرن التاسع عشر . فالكاتب يستوحي يوميات البعثة السِّفارية التي وجّهها ملك إسبانيا إلى سلطان المغرب عام 1863 ، ليرسم للمسلمين المغاربة ، أو " الموروس " ، من منظور كاتب شاب ، صورةً غرائبيةً تجمع بين المتناقضات ؛ بين القوة والضعف ، الجمال والقبح ، الرقة والوحشية ، ويمزج في وصفه بين الوقائع التاريخية ، والإستيهامات الغربية حول الشرق ، والأطاريح الإستعمارية وما تحمله من فكر توسعي لبلدان المغرب العربي في القرن التاسع عشر .
يتألف الكتاب من ست وعشرين فصلاً نذكر من العناوين : " من كورونيا إلى جبل طارق " ، " جبل طارق - مدينة طنجة - المؤذنون وجرس دير المبشرين الفرنسيسكانيين " ، " إيستر اليهودية - بداية مغامرة غريبة ونهايتها " ، " بادية القصر الكبير - العرائس - المدفع المقدس - شعوذة اليهود " ، " الفرّوج - حفلات الزفاف عند المغاربة - عدالةُ أبٍ مرعبة " ، " خطر الموت " ( ... ) وعناوين أخرى .
