إن المعتقدات الدينية عند سكان وادي الرافدين تزودنا بوثائق غنية وكثيرة، تغطي تاريخ الديانة خلال ثلاثة آلاف عام، وهذه المعتقدات الدينية والوثائق الخاصة بها، يمكن أن تفهم على أنها هي التي سبقت الديانة المسيحية.
يعرّف هذا الكتاب بالديانة السامية والفكر الديني عند الساميين، ويدرس الديانة في وادي الرافدين، بدءاً من 900ق.م، عندما دخل البابليون التاريخ، وكانت فترة الاستقرار والازدهار لمجموعات الساميين، فنظموا عالم مجمع الآلهة بطريقة كاملة.
كما درسوا العالم والنجوم ودورانها ومداراتها، مما سهل لهم ترتيب الكون بنظام أبدي وعرفوا كيف يدخلون هذا النظام في عالم الآلهة، لقد توصلوا إلى تكوين ديانة علمية حقيقية، كان لها الدور العميق والمؤثر على حضارة العالم اليوم.
