يشكل الشيعة في العراق مابين 55 -60% من سكان العراق ويعتبرون أكبر مكون مذهبي في العراق، ويسكنون في وسط، وجنوب العراق، بالاضافة الى تواجد متفرق في شمال العراق أيضا.ويشكل الشيعة الاغلبية في 10 محافظات من اصل 18 محافظة عراقية ، أما بالنسبة للمحافظات الثمانية الباقية فاربعة منها ( صلاح الدين – نينوى – ديالى – كركوك) تتواجد فيها الشيعة بنسب متفاوتة.وتعرض الشيعة في العراق الى عمليات تهجير واسعة في عدد من المحافظات العراقية، وخاصة من بغداد، والمحافظات السنية من قبل الميليشيات السنية، والقاعدة، وداعش بعد 2003 .ومعظم الشيعة في العراق هم من العرب، والمتبقي هم من الكرد، والتركمان. والشيعة في العراق في غالبهم من الشيعة الامامية ، والذين يؤمنون بالائمة ال12 فالشيعة يمثلون أغلبية سكان العراق، وعلى الرغم من عدم وجود إحصائيات دقيقة في العراق بسبب ان جميع الإحصائيات والتي أجريت في العراق لم يتم تحديد الهوية المذهبية للفرد فيها، بالاضافة الى أن آخر إحصاء سكاني أجري في العراق قد كان في عام 1997، ولكنه عموما فان الشيعة يمثلون النسبة الأكبر من سكان العراق في حال تقسيم العراق على أسس مذهبية. وبصورة عامة؛ فان المذهب الشيعي ينتشر في جنوب ووسط العراق، ويشكلون ثلثي نسبة العرب في العراق، ويشكلون قرابة 10%من نسبة الكرد،(ويسكنون في مناطق خانقين، ومندلي، وبدرة، وبغداد، والكرد الشبك في أطراف مدينة الموصل ) ويشكلون 45%من نسبة التركمان في العراق، لذلك فان الصفة العربية هي الطاغية على المذهب الشيعي في العراق
