في مجرى الأحداث الإنسانية، غالباً ما نتذكر أن كثيراً مما في الحياة لا يمكن التنبؤ به فكثير من الأحداث الأكثر أهمية تأخذنا على حين غِرة. الثورة الإيرانية عام 1979، يسقط الإتحاد السوفييتي عام 1989! والهجوم على برجي مركز التجارة العالمي في الحادي عشر من سبتمبر عام 2001 . وفقاعة الإسكان والرهن العقاري عام 2007. والربيع العربي عام 2011، جميع ذلك، يحضر إلى الذهن مباشرة . وبالرغم من الجهود الممتازة التي يبذلها الخبراء والأكاديميون والمحللون الإستخباراتيون لاستشراف المستقبل؛ فإن الأحداث التاريخية تذكرنا باستمرار بقصورنا عن فعل ذلك، في السابع عشر من ديسمبر عام 2010، وقع مثل ذلك الحدث، لم يكن يستطيع أن يتوقع أن ذلك الحدث، الذي يبدو غير مهم، في بلد صغير، والبعض يراه ثانوياً ، في الشرق الأوسط تونس، سيكون من شأنه تغيير مسار التاريخ في الشرق الأوسط كله، لكن هذا ما حدث، أشعل محمد البوعزيزي، البائع المتجول الذي كان يبلغ من العمر 26 عاماً؛ النار في نفسه في يأس تام إحتجاجاً على ظلم الوضع الراهن، وبحلول مارس عام 2011 كانت موجة من الإحتجاجات قد اجتاحت منطقة الشرق الأوسط، وفيما نجت بعض الأنظمة الحاكمة من تلك الإحتجاجات فقد انهارت أنظمة أخرى، وما زال هناك الكثير مما لا نفهمه من أحداث العامين 2010-2011 لكننا نعلم أن النسيج الإجتماعي والسياسي لتلك اللمنطقة قد تغير إلى الأبد.
على الرغم من أن أحداث الربيع العربي نذكر العالم العربي - مجدداً - كيف أن فهمه للعالم العربي ضئيل؛ فقد قدم سوقاً لصناع الرأي من مختلف الأنواع ، تشرح نقطة التحول تلك. الإقتصادية الباهتة، والمؤسسات الجامدة التي تعاني فقر الدم، والحكام المملون، ودور وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي ؛ نذكر جميعها ضمن التفسيرات المفصلة. ومن المثير للدهشة، أنه قد سعت قلة فقط لتفسير الدور الذي لعبته الجيوش خلال هذه الثورة الكاسحة، فإن أي دارس للشرق الأوسط العربي سيخبرك أن الجيوش العربية كانت دائماً في مركز الحياة السياسية في الشرق الأوسط. وكقاعدة عامة ولمدة طويلة، مثّلت القوات المسلحة أقوى المؤسسات المحلة في جميع أنحاء المنطقة إن الإنقلابات العسكرية التي حدثت في خمسينيات وستينيات القرن الماضي، وانتشار القادة العرب ذوي المؤهلات العسكرية ، وسردية العدوان الإسرائيلي التي سلط الضوء عليها كثيراً، والموارد الهائلة التي خُصصت لنفقات الدفاع، كل ذلك منح الجيوش العربية أدواراً مهمة للغاية لتلعبها في الشؤون الداخلية والخارجية.
