يمثل هذا الكتاب تكملة لـ: "أزمة الإسلام السياسي- الجبهة القومية الإسلامية في السودان نموذجًا" والذي صدر بعد أقل من عامين من الانقلاب الحالي. وكان الكتاب بمثابة تحليل فكري نظري للحركة الإسلامية السودانية منذ نشأتها الأولى وحتى نهاية الثمانينيات، راصدًا للاتجاهات الفكرية والأدوات الحزبية التنظيمية. ووجدت الحركة الفرصة لتطبيق شعاراتها وأفكارها وقناعاتها الأيديولوجية حين استولت على السلطة كاملة في الثلاثين من يونيو/ حزيران 1989. لذلك يأتي هذا الكتاب كمحاكمة فكرية لاختبار الممارسة وهل تحولت الأقوال إلى أفعال؟ وفي حالة الفشل الراهن للحركة كيف يمكن تفسير هذا السقوط المدوي للمشروع الحضاري عند التطبيق؟ ونسأل أين يكمن الخطأ أو الخلل، هل في فساد الفكرة أو في ضعف التحليل والتنظير أم في الأشخاص والمؤسسات أم في الظروف الخارجية؟ يفترض- كجزء من التفكير العلمي- وجود قدرة على التوقعات والاحتمالات والتنبؤات، تضع في الاعتبار كل شيء وتحيط به وتحطاط له.
