يعد هذا الكتاب من نفائس المخطوطات العربية إذ إنه موجز لتاريخ دمشق السياسي ترجم فيه لكل من حكم دمشق منذ الفتح الإسلامي في عهد الخلفاء الراشدين والأمويين والعباسيين ثم الطولونيين والفاطميين والقرامطة والحمدانيين والسلاجقة والنوريين والأيوبيين والمماليك حتى ولاية المارداني الثانية.وتطرق المؤلف إلى حياة الشخصية الدقيقة لبعض الولاة لاسيما الذين عاصرهم فتحدث عن حياتهم السياسية وعن نمط معيشتهم وغذائهم وشرابهم وصيدهم وعلاقاتهم بأفراد أسرهم ومع خدمهم حتى العاطفية منها فهو صورة صادقة لعصره.. ومن مزايا الكتاب أن مؤلفه كان شاهد عيان لبعض الأحداث التي سردها عن أخبار بعض الولاة الذين عاصرهم إضافة إلى أنه شغل مناصب هامة في الدولة المملوكية وتعرف فيها على بعض أسرارها فذكرها في كتابه. ويذكر غالباً تاريخ وفاة كل وال أما الولادة فلا يذكرها إلا نادراً. كما عمد إلى وضع عناوين في بداية كل عصر من العصور الإسلامية..
