يدور موضوع الكتاب حول المناهج النقدية والقواعد المرتبطة بتجميع البيانات وتحليلها للوصول إلى نتائج ملموسة . ولكثرة الكتب الراصدة لتطورات المناهج النقدية ، سعى الدكتور سعيد عبد الهادي المرهج في كتابه المعنون " مناهج النقد الأدبي وتحليل النصوص الأدبية " أن يقرب المنهج من المراد الحقيقي لطالب العلم أو الناقد ، أي استعمال هذا المنهج في تحليل النص الأدبي . لذلك تم التركيز على بيان المفاصل الرئيسة في المنهج التي يمكن للطالب ، أو الناقد الناشئ أن يوظفها في قراءاته للعمل الأدبي وتحليله وتفكيكه بحيث يتمكن من تطبيق هذا المنهج على نص إبداعي ، ولذلك عرض المؤلف للخطوط العامة لأكثر من منهج ، على اعتبار أنها ، مناهج تعلمية ، إذ يوجد في كل منهج عشرات المسارات الخاصة المتمايزة عن بعضها ، فكان هذا الكتاب بمثابة اختزال مؤول للمناهج ليس بعيد عن مبتغى أصحاب المنهج والمنظرين الأساسيين له ، لهذا اعتبر المؤلف أن غايته الأساس " تفسيرية - تعليمية ، لكنها بالتأكيد لم تكن الوحيدة .. لقد سعينا ضمناً لمحاججة الدراسات المشابهة ، والمختصرات الشائعة .. محاججة غير معلنة ، لكونها سعت إلى ردم ما استشعرت أنه هوة يجب أن تردم ، وتجنب الإطال والملل ... " .
يتألف الكتاب من سبعة فصول ، وهي الفصل الأول بعنوان " المنهج التاريخي .. نظرات في مسارات أعلامه الكبار : 1- سانت بيف ( 1804-1869 ) ، 2- هيبوليت تين ( 1828 - 1893 ) ، 3- برونتير ( 1849 - 1907 ) ، 4- غوستاف لانسون ( 1857-1934 ) . أما الفصل الثاني فيسلط الضوء على المنهج الإجتماعي في دراسة النص الأدبي ، بينما تناول الفصل الثالث : المنهج النفسي وتحليل النص الأدبي ، وركز الفصل الرابع على العلاقة بين : النبوية والمنهج البنيوي ( الشعرية والنقد البنيوي ) . وشرح الفصل الخامس " السيمائية السردية " وعلم " الدلالة النبوية " ، وتناول الفصل السادس : نظرية الإستقبال ( التلقي ) ، وعرض الفصل السابع والأخير لـ : التاريخانية الجديدة والنقد الثقافي ( النقد الثقافي في المجال النقدي العربي ) . وأخيراً مسرد المصادر والمراجع .
