يحتل "النقد الجديد" في الزمن الحالي، بما ينهضُ عليه هذا النقد من مناهج وما يتولَّدُ منه من مدارس وتوجهاتٍ، مكانةً فاعلةَ في الحياة الثقافيَّة، بشكل عامِّ، كما في الحياة الأدبيَّة، بشكل خاص، ولعل مرجع هذا الأمر أن النقد بات علماً موضوعيّاً أكثر منه توجُّهاً أدبيَّاً - إنشائياً او إنطباعيّاً، يعتمد على كثيرٍ من المعطياتِ المسبقةِ أو الذَّاتيةِ والمزاجيَّةِ لدى النَّاقد.
قد تكون السّمَةُ الأبرز بين ما يعرف بـــ"النقد القديم" أو "التقليديِّ" وما يعرفُ اليوم بــ"النقد الجديد"، أن الأول يسعى إلى الإصدار الأحكام إستناداً إلى قواعد أو تصوراتٍ مسبقةٍ، في حين أن الثاني لا يسعى إلى أكثر من فهمِ الواقع.
الهدف الأساسُ من هذا الكتاب أمران: أوَّلهما تبيانُ ملامح أساسيةُ من "النقد الجديد، تشكلاً وفاعليَّةً وتوجُّهات، وثانيهما تبيانُ ملامح أساسيَّةٍ، من "النقد الجديد"، تشكلاً وفاعليَّةً وتوجُّهات، وثانيهما تبيانٌ تطبيقيُّ لفاعليَّةِ هذا النقد في الكشفِ عن العملِ الأدبيِّ وفهمهِ، وليس الحُكْمُ عليه، إظهاراً لجدوىً ما للنتائج التي يُمْكِنُ الوُصُولُ إليها في مجالِ المُمارسةِ النقديَّةِ الأدبيَّة.
