من المعروف لدينا إن تطور أي بلد يعتمد على جمع وحصر المعلومات الخاصة بالموارد الطبيعية والصناعية والإقتصادية وغيرها، وذلك لإستخدامها في التخطيط المستقبلي أو لإيجاد الحلول للمشكلات المرتبطة بهذا البلد، وقد تعددت طرق ومصادر جمع المعلومات، ومن هذي الطرق: الطرق التقليدية، مثل الأعمال الميدانية والإحصاءات وغيرها، إلا أن التوسع في الحاجة إلى البيانات المكانية، سواءً من حيث الحجم المساحي أو دقة التفاصيل، جعلت المصادر التقليدية غير كافية أو غير عملية من ناحية سرعة الحصول على المعلومة او دقتها.
فدعت الحاجة لإبتكار طرق جديدة لجمع المعلومات، ومن هذه الطرق جمع المعلومات أو البيانات عن هدف دون الوصول إليه أو ملامسته وذلك ما يعرف اليوم بعلم الإستشعار عن بعد (Remote Sensing)، الذي كان يعرف سابقاً بمصطلح تحليل ودراسة الصور الجوية (Aerial Photo Interpretation) وكان يقصد بذلك الصور الفوتوغرافية التي تؤخذ بواسطة الطائرات أو المناطيد أو غيرها بإستخدام الأفلام التقليدية.
وفي عام 1960م ظهر لفظ الإستشعار عن بعد لأول مرة، فقد أصبحت هناك مناظر أو مرئيات (Image) تؤخذ من بعد ولكنها تختلف في طريق تشكيلها وإستخراجها عن الصور الفوتوغرافية، وإن كانت لا تختلف عنها من حيث المظهر، وأصبح لفظ الصور الجوية يعني الصور المأخوذة بواسطة الطائرات أو المناطيد، التي تستخدم طرق التصوير التقليدية في النطاق المرئي من الأشعة الكهرومغناطيسية.
